I'm On A Rant

Busy day today -- working on some great PR for a DVD client. Working on the outline for my next FASCINAX story for Randy and Jean Marc Lofficier's Black Coat Press SHADOWMEN series, AND SENDING OUT A BUNCH OF EMAILS looking for work. The usual.

Then, for some reason, I started going off on various things -

I went to GROOVY AGE OF HORROR and ranted about how I thought the Drac stories Curt was running on his site should be in black & white.

I also ranted about how VAN HELSING should have been in B/W. At least it would have taken some of the sting out of those awful scenes...

Then I went over to Fred Olen Ray's RETROMEDIA FORUM and ranted about all the silly filmmakers I've seen in my career and the stupid shit they've done (I include myself in that number sometimes because, yes dear reader, I make mistakes too!)...

I decided I was going to take a break and watch a new DVD I purchased last week at Amoeba for only $14.99 still in the wrapper - BLADE TRINITY.

I don't even know where to begin with this rant, so I'm not even gonna start it. I'll wait til tomorrow.

Bill,
One of the things that bothered me most about Van Helsing is I thought the same people did a great job with the Mummy and Mummy Returns. The Mummy movies were fun pulp adventures. Popcorn movies at their finest. Van Helsing had the chance to be something similar, only cooler with vampires and Frankenstein.

Will Hollywood never learn? More Villains does not equal better movie. It equals worse movie. Just look at the Batman franchise. Batman Returns would have been fantastic if it had just had Catwoman. They should never have underestimated the power of Michelle Pfeiffer in black rubber carrying a whip.

I understand what you're driving at - you shouldn't have more than one villain, but you CAN have henchmen and subordinates which works well. In my script THE SKULL, I have a group of gang leaders who all keep their identities secret by wearing those Mexican wrestling masks and adopting code names...but they all answer to the main baddie EL Diablo.

The Skull of course, isn't wearing a mask, but is a man who got his face burned off and lost his memory when the gang tied him to a post and burned him alive in a junkyard. He's taking down the gang that "killed" him to get his "life" back.

One by one he goes through the masked gangsters, killing them and taking their masks.

But again, what the Batman movies did was pile on the baddies and make them all equal which dilutes their effectiveness as villains...
