Smack-dab in the middle of the Academy Awards on March 5, Sid Ganis, head of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, took the stage to disparage DVDs.
"No self-respecting filmmaker," he told audiences, "has ever "finished a shot in a movie, stood back and said, 'That's going to look great on DVD.' Because there is nothing like the experience of watching a movie in a darkened theater ... and sharing the experience with total strangers."
Oh, that's why all the studios are making DVD Premiere movies? Because there's no "self-respecting filmmakers?"

good point. but you have to admit there is something romantic about a movie on a large screen in a dark room.
Agreed. But just because the studios are putting crappy movies onscreen doesn't mean it's DVD's "fault".
They fear change. They don't embrace it, therefore they fall victim to it.
He is soon to be a lone wolf, and he knows it ... Hollywood, with Soderbergh leading the charge, will finally properly embrace DVDs, and we will all benefit
Yeah, I still love this conversation that I've had about a million times.
Them: "Oh, you shot a movie!"
me: "Yeah."
Them: "Where can I see it?"
me: "It'll be out in Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, pretty much any dvd store."
Them(sympathetic): "Oh. It's going direct to dvd..."

Well He's wrong, I remember Shaun of the Dead was written expressly for DVD. So fuck that guy.

Why does he make that sound creepy?
This guy is missing the fact that you can set up a fairly decent home theatre for around $2500, and that's Aussie dollars as well. Surround sound, large screen, etc.
There has to be a reason to see it at the cinema, good story perhaps? Mind you, Jessica Alba in a bikini nearly cuts it.

...Sheesh... the darkened room full of total strangers and their cell phones and full voice conversations of the "who's that guy?" variety are on the list of things that keep me away from the theatre. The football-field sized screen is usually what brings me back, but there's no turning back the clock. And why would anyone want to? With a DVD, there's no pesky armrest between me & the Mrs and a large popcorn costs about six cents. To say nothing of the fact that we can own the film for what it costs to see it once at the theatres.
The real frustration about this attitude is that DVD sales have been saving their butts, and still they make with the high-hat.
So, um...does this mean the Academy will stop sending out screeners?
