Anybody have any idea of the budgets? I recognize the 'cool' factor here but if they each spent 50 million to simulate a grind house movie, not sure how cool that is exactly.
Were these made under the Guild's jurisdictions? Rodriguez quit the DGA over Sin City...and because these movies are packaged together, was Tarantino able to remain guild (or all the crew/cast for that matter - don't they sort of stand together united to get all areas under under the unions?), or did he have to quit as well?
I think it's to the point now where Tarantino just puts ideas down on index cards and closes his eyes and mixes them up. He figures his genius is so massive, anything he comes up with will be brilliant.
I know. People at Ain't it Cool are going ape shit over this film. I spent too much time pretending to like Kill Bill and I wanted my money back from Sin City, so I'm done faking it. I miss Reservoir Dogs. That movie was small and beautiful. This is bloated crap.
Well, the point of GRINDHOUSE is to recreate those double-bills of yesteryear where the movies didn't have big budgets, but had exploitative subject matter. That's how they competed and made money. YouTube has several blocks of trailers up on their site of original grindhouse movies, so just type in "grindhouse" and scroll down. They were cheap, loud, obnoxious, dirty and sold you exactly what they had on tap - sex, violence, horror, drugs - an experience you WEREN'T going to get at the upscale family theaters.
Tarantino and Rodriguez are not only recreating the movies of that period, they are recreating the Experience by adding trailers to movies that haven't been made yet, and screening it as a double bill.
To answer Will's observations earlier, I don't know the details yet. I looked on IMDB pro and there was no info available as to the budget, etc...but knowing Rodriguez, he probably made day player deals with everyone the same he did for DESPERADO, etc...so he could keep the budget as low as possible. Yes, it's SAG. I don't know if they split the productions up legally to get around the DGA and WGA issues.
As far as the unions standing united...hahahahahahahahaha! Hasn't happened yet. Probably never will. I've been on shows that weren't SAG, but were IATSE and vice-versa. Is TX a "right-to-work" state, anyone?
I'm still waiting to hear back from folks in Austin.

Just some questions for the room.
I'll look it up and make some "discreet inquiries" with friends in the Austin.
