This is What the New Phantom Looks Like...

Thoughts?

And I suppose we should post a comparison...

Looks like it was designed by a committee of marketing executives. And why is he so skinny?

The original is essentially a spandex hooded unitard. Those are hard to make look good on camera in any color other than black (believe me, I've tried ;-).

The armor pieces on the new look(s) seem fairly practical and wearable. The structure looks nice and would seem to lessen the "gathering" of the fabric at the joints when it's actually built.

The redesign puts the "utility belt" up higher. This seems like a more practical position for it, but less "cinematic" (as we tend to like our guns hanging low like a cowboy's.)

The shoes on the redesign seem a bit fey, I think I'd go back to the original's nice jump boots. But they may have been redesigned for a script reason.

The wrist cuffs on the redesign are nice. I don't know if the material will be such they can hold their shape. In fact, I'm not entirely sure how the actor gets in this costume -- do the arms have some sorts of fasteners?

The bottom piece of the costume, to my eye, doesn't entirely match the top piece for detail. Of course, nobody ever sees the bottoms of costumes anyway ;-).

The "skinniness" is probably just a result of the tradition of costume designers sketches looking that way.

Don't know about the hood... it looks too padded or something. Reminds me of a diaper.

But I dig the rest.

The Ghost Who Walks translates into modern times about as well as most other newspaper action strips which is not at all. Flash Gordon had potential but that Sci Fi Channel series killed any hope I had for the character.

Awesome blog, by the way.

Well, to me this says "futuristic urban warrior from the Akira anime" instead of "The Ghost Who Walks."

The fact this is being produced in Montreal kind of confirms my suspicions...

I'm all for rebooting old stuff for new audiences, but do it in a way that doesn't double tap the old stuff in the back of the head. (see FLASH GORDON reboot on SyFy).

We shall see...

Dude, it's skateboard padding and a hoodie. A hoodie. Crap on a stick.

It's crap. Like everything the SighFy channel touches. They could have very easily done the period piece and made it good. But for whatever reason, again, they felt the need to modernize it for the sake of. As if it's more relatable. Maybe for the writers. It's just like making Peter Parker and Mary Jane get a divorce because people can't write a happily married couple.

If you just write a good solid story people will watch it. I hope this whole project crashes and burns. The sooner the better. It's such a shame.

The phantom could still have the costume with an update. There is no need to ditch the colors. I don't want to watch the Phantom and think of how functional his suit should be in the real world. He won't wear a Danskin in the first place.

The bunching could be cleared up with a touch of CGI like is used on the bunching of Hellboy.

Build a SOLID and compelling story and I'll buy the rest.

I think it would be cool to think of the Phantom in the way we've always seen him - a unending force of justice in the jungle - urban or otherwise.

I also hope that they draft some members of the Cirque du Soleil (based in Montreal) to provide some of the acrobatic stunts required and give the show a look that recaptures some of those covers from the paperback series.

I wouldn't mind a black, stealthy costume with form fitting joint/spine protection and purple accents. I just think that they've missed the implications of the Phantom's visual dynamic. He's part ninja warrior, part acrobat when he's in costume.

Oh well.
