Occasional Superheroine Valerie D'Orazio has put the 1st book in her trilogy  THE END OF THE VAMPIRE CRAZE IN NYC online here.  (Val - I want to know the results of this free experiment!)

Francesco Francavilla and the boys over at Comic Twart are drawing Abuli and Bernet's TORPEDO.  I may have an idea or two to throw their way - not that they need me at all. They bring the awesome quite well on their own.

How to Make Money with Free Media..

People look at me aghast when I tell them to put their movie up online for free. They look at me aghast when I mention merchandising and advertising and p2p networks. They look at me aghast when I tell them to forget about festivals and sending out screeners to distributors. They look at me aghast when I tell them Twitter , YouTube and Facebook will increase their sales more than a distributor or an award win.

They look at me aghast when I tell them to quit living in the 20th century. To rethink what it means to be a filmmaker. To rethink what it means to be a distributor. To rethink the economics and methodologies of all of it (which was long overdue). To rethink things like copyright and user friendliness.

Would it help if you listened to this guy instead? Because seriously - if you want to survive in the next decade as a mediamaker; If you want to make inroads into the entertainment industry...

Then you are going to have to listen.

If you go here, you can download (for free, natch) Film Festival Secrets by Christopher Holland. This is a PDF text version of his print book which will be coming out later next year.

You must sign up to get the book, but it's worth it as Christopher will be sending out newsletters, etc... via email (same way Bill Martell does).

While I am not a super big fan of film festivals in general, they are a way to market your movie and I would be remiss to not let you know about this resource.

An Ironclad Weekend

I'm going to see IRON MAN in about an hour or so, but already it's been an IRON MAN-filled weekend. I went to Meltdown yesterday for Free Comic Book Day and had a great time, picking through the new, free stuff and going through the bargain boxes for gems that I had previously missed. Picked up a run of RUSE - a Holmesian pastiche from Crossgen- and jumped for joy.

One great thing is that they had a ton of Iron Man movie promotion material and I picked up several of the Activity books and Jr. Novels for the kids here in the neighborhood who need the help reading english. They already know me as that guy with the cool posters and books in his house (they see it every Halloween when I open the door), so I think I've cemented my geek cred with the locals.


It's really cool to put a book in a kid's hands. Try it.

Free is the New Black

We've talked about the internet and free before, gang and it seems that everyone has read the Wired article and leaped onto the new internet economy or pointed the way to the land of the free...

But really I didn't expect these.

And in fiddling around, I didn't expect to find these either.

Nor these.
